Movie Review: Vettaiyan

Image
Rajini is not yet finished! Its been 5 days since the movie released and all reports indicate the movie is still going strong. I've already watched the movie twice. On the opening night and during the weekend and on both days, the show was more than 75% full.  After the success of Jailer in 2023, expectations for Vettaiyan were not very much with the makers of the movie keeping the hype and expectations low, but with the release of the movie and the positive word of mouth feedback, the movie is on track to become yet another massive hit for Thalaivar.  Straight up, the movie is a T.J.Gnanavel movie with the mass moments built in for the hardcore Rajini fans. The story in the movie is completely different to what I and many others expected it to be after watching the prevue and trailer. In my opinion, there is like 3 different messages inside this story that TJGn has delivered to the audience. The screenplay keeps you thinking whats happening with very few moments where you can...

Movie Review: Kalki 2898 AD

An interesting film but a little confusing to follow along. Also, movie could have been about 30 mins less in terms of running time.  To start with, talking about the VFX work, its top notch for an indian film. The opening credits mentioned a whole lot of VFX companies who have worked on this movie and the result shows. But at times, for the keen eyed person, you can see the faults in the VFX in some shots but those are excusable.  In terms of cast, you've got the who's who in Indian cinema.. Amitabh to me was the best out of the lot. His acting and characterization was good. His intro scene, from the eyes you can say it was him. Kamal's screen time was less but makes a good impact. Other characters are okay. Deepika at times looks like she's overacting. Disha Patani game just for glamour element it looked like. After one scene and song, she just went missing completely..  But a massive minus for the film was Prabhas. The 30 mins which could have been removed from the f...

Movie Review: Avatar - The Way of Water

James Cameron made us wait 12 years for the sequel and he didn't disappoint.  Just like the first movie that came out in 2009, Avatar: The way of water is in a league of its own. Don't watch the movie for the story or the characters. Watch it to realize how amazing James Cameron's imagination and creativity is.  The story is not something unique or out of the world. The usual hero, hero protecting the family from the villain and everything that happens in-between that story. Some even said it mirrors the storyline of the 1st movie but to me its clearly a different movie.  The cinematography is on a different level. You can clearly see the effort that has been put into this movie if you watch the movie in a cinema that has good picture quality. No wonder they had to build their own special cameras for this. I watched it in 2D so im assuming the 3D version is going to be even better.  The sound work is also equally impressive. I noticed that the sound engineers have pu...

Movie Review: Ponniyin Selvan Part 1

Image
A movie 70 years in the making they say. Many tried. Many failed. But Mani succeeded. After a few attempts at least.  I'll start by saying, no, I have NOT read the book. But I've heard numerous people talk about it. Describe parts of it. Praise the creativity of the author. And listened to about 20 mins of a 1.5 hr summarised version of the books.  #PonniyinsSelvan The Movie is Mani Ratnam's version of Kalki's book. Don't expect a word to word representation of the book. That being said, the movie is MASSIVE! Casting is perfect. The list is too long to describe one by one. But everyone is on their A game. From the smallest character to the largest. Karthi plays his role well. Aish, Trisha, Vikram just take over the moment. That meeting scene of the two female leads is beautifully shot making the viewers try to decide who is going to win the contest. Ravi Varman's camera work is stunning capturing the beauty of the Chola Kingdom and the other locations as well a...

Movie Review: Minions Rise of Gru

No petrol.. No vehicle.. walked to the theater and watched it..  Less than half the theater of people and many were adults. Clearly the target audience for minions is not kids.  Pure nostalgic idiotic fun by the little yellow guys. Missed the grown up Gru.  Not going to write a review.  Just watch the movie for fun or if you want to take your mind off all those nonsense that is happening in the country.

Movie Review: Valimai

Completely disappointed. Overall, movie looked like a low budget movie made with a big budget.. Ajith's costume's dont match his character at all.. only costume that looked ok was the bike suit.. in everything else his head looks too big or too small.. and whats with the walk? As if he has been to the gym for the first time and his muscles have all locked up..  Music was vera mai... BGM's were clearly "inspired" from so many other Rajini, Vijay movies.. Sound mixing also dint feel right.. —  watching Valimai at PVR Cinema, One Galle Face Mall. Cinematography was bad. Colours were too bright at times and looks like the camera man got a new slow mo cam and was playing with it.. so many unnecessary slo-mo shots jst dragging the film..  To me, movie looked like a foreign language film which was dubbed in tamil.. the dubbing mixing was also so bad..  Supporting characters were clearly overacting..  Story, well, its ok, ill shut up.. And for god sake, please get a tec...
