Movie Review: Avatar - The Way of Water
James Cameron made us wait 12 years for the sequel and he didn't disappoint.
Just like the first movie that came out in 2009, Avatar: The way of water is in a league of its own. Don't watch the movie for the story or the characters. Watch it to realize how amazing James Cameron's imagination and creativity is.
The story is not something unique or out of the world. The usual hero, hero protecting the family from the villain and everything that happens in-between that story. Some even said it mirrors the storyline of the 1st movie but to me its clearly a different movie.
The cinematography is on a different level. You can clearly see the effort that has been put into this movie if you watch the movie in a cinema that has good picture quality. No wonder they had to build their own special cameras for this. I watched it in 2D so im assuming the 3D version is going to be even better.
The sound work is also equally impressive. I noticed that the sound engineers have put in the effort to even include the smallest details in terms of sound effects.
The cast have also delivered. From the minor background figures to the main characters, everyone seems to be aware what is required for this movie. The guy who plays the character "Spider" should be specially commended for being able to do most of what the others do with the help of graphics, on his own.
The editing for me is the only area of concern. The movie is a bit too long at 3 hours 12 minutes. With the pre-movie commercials, trailers and the break in the middle, that's almost 3.5 hours in the cinema. They could have reduced nearly 20 mins of footage in the 1st half of the movie. May be they thought its good to start with a flash back to get people to remember the 1st movie.
But the best part of the movie is the graphics. The visual effects. Not sure if i've seen something this good in a motion capture - live action movie in a really really long time. The attention to detail of every scene is amazing. The VFX team have brought James Cameron's vision to live in a beautiful way. The differences in characters from the different tribes, from they way they walk to the way their facial expressions, not sure if even Marvel goes into that much of details.
Like I said in the beginning, watch it to realize how much creativity and imagination James Cameron has and to experience it in all its glory.
My Rating: 4/5
