Movie Review: Kalki 2898 AD
An interesting film but a little confusing to follow along. Also, movie could have been about 30 mins less in terms of running time.
To start with, talking about the VFX work, its top notch for an indian film. The opening credits mentioned a whole lot of VFX companies who have worked on this movie and the result shows. But at times, for the keen eyed person, you can see the faults in the VFX in some shots but those are excusable.
In terms of cast, you've got the who's who in Indian cinema.. Amitabh to me was the best out of the lot. His acting and characterization was good. His intro scene, from the eyes you can say it was him. Kamal's screen time was less but makes a good impact. Other characters are okay. Deepika at times looks like she's overacting. Disha Patani game just for glamour element it looked like. After one scene and song, she just went missing completely..
But a massive minus for the film was Prabhas. The 30 mins which could have been removed from the film, about 25 mins would have been scenes of his. It seemed like the director consciously focused too much on Prabhas and given him screen time more than required. The entry fight sequence could have been 1/3rd of what it was. The unnecessary comedy scenes of his all should have been taken out at the editing table.
Santhosh Narayanan has done a good job with the music. Not many songs in the movie (only 2 if i can remember), but the BGM was good. The sound design also was very good.
Editing could have been better. Some times, itw as difficult to follow along the movie as I said before.
Cinematography and Art direction was also good. Mixing history, dystopia and technology in a Indian film can always be tricky but I think it was handled well in this movie.
Overall, okay film to watch if you have a long attention span and can sit through the "mokka" jokes and dialogues of Prabhas..
Looking forward to the next installment of the Kalki Cinematic Universe..
My Review: 3.5/5
