Movie Review: Darbar

A pure commercial entertainer film..

Here's my review. Dont read if you dont want to find out about the movie before you wathc..

Its that time of the year again. A Rajini movie is out and its time to celebrate for Rajini fans around the world.

To start with, this is a pure commercial entertainer film. As always dont look for logic, but the movie has some good elements in-terms of the story. —  watching Darbar.

A.R.Murugadoss has done the film as a pure Thalaivar fan.. the way he portrays Thalaivar in the film can only be done by a original thalaivar fan. Some of the shots taken just bring back the very original rajini style.. the walk, the dialogues, the winks, the emotions, the facial expressions and the best is the sun glasses.. just pure original thalaivar.. Darbar was more original thalaivar than Petta..

The first half of the movie was fast, catchy, comical, thalaivary, and good plot with a good twist.. second half was not exactly the best in terms of story telling.. for all the build up made in the first half, the second half and climax could have been much better..

Cinematography was excellent in the movie.. as said before, the shot selections and setups are really good..

Rajini as always was good in his acting. Although he wasnt as buffed up like usual policeman in indian films, he was more natural in the movie although at some closeup shots it looks like the costume was a bit too baggy for rajini's body..

In terms of the female leads, Nayanthara was not a necessary character at all.. It sounded like she was there just for the romance and comedy scenes.. Niveditha Thomas was good and essential to the plot and did a good job in her role..

In terms of songs, chumma kizhi picturization was a let down.. expected much more from that hit song. Best picturization was  for Thara Mara Single and Dum Dum.. Thani Vazhi was a background song used in a few different places, mainly in the first 15-20 minutes.

In terms of BGM, the second reason for this movie to run other than it being a rajini movie is the BGM.. once again Anirudh has done some good work with the BGM's.. the multiple remixes of the annamali theme song were a hit.. but now that Anirudh has done this trick for two Rajini movies, he should not do this for his next Rajini movie or it will sound too usual.

Overall, an ok movie to watch.. From the time the Super Start R.A.J.I.N.I title card comes on stage till the end of the movie, its watchable..

Personally, Petta had a better story while Darbar had Rajini originality.

My Score: 6.5/10
